United States Forest Service Leverages Electric Vehicle Charging Solution for Remote Areas

The United States Department of Agriculture Forest Service successfully deployed a stand-alone solar-powered electric vehicle (EV) charging station at the Wolf Creek Job Corps Civilian Conservation Center to serve its five-vehicle fleet. The solar-powered charging station is a great option for the Wolf Creek Center due to its remote location and limited access to the grid. Fleet managers and energy managers planning for fleet electrification at similarly remote sites across the federal government are encouraged to read the full success story to learn more about the Forest Service’s experience.

Federal Fleet Charging Challenge Coming Soon!

CharginFlyer

FEMP, National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL), and GSA Fleet are excited to announce that the Third EV Charging Challenge is coming soon! Beginning October 1 and running through December 31, 2022, you and your EV drivers will have the opportunity to compete with fellow federal drivers to see if you can charge more and fill with gas less, increasing your total e-miles! We especially want you to focus on charging your plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEV) over filling it with gas.

EVs have many benefits such as lower tailpipe emissions when compared to conventionally fueled vehicles. As the grid continues to be powered by more and more renewable sources, the average EV could produce emissions equal to a conventionally fueled car that gets 88 MPG (hint: not many gasoline cars get that kind of MPG!).

Categories we will be judging include:

  • Most Improved Agency
  • Most Total Electric Miles (estimate)
  • PHEV highest percent of use on Electric (highest MPG)

Winners will be announced at FedFleet 2023!

For questions, email GSAFleetAFVTeam@gsa.gov or Federal.Fleets@nrel.gov.

New Tool: Power Outage: What’s the Damage?

Power outages can incur significant costs: lost data, diminished worker productivity, spoilage of perishable food, disruption to critical services, and more. The FEMP-funded Customer Damage Function (CDF) Calculator helps federal facility managers and resilience planners quantify electric grid outage impacts to support resilience investments.

New Self-Paced, On-Demand Trainings

The following are recently posted trainings. Visit the FEMP Training Catalog to view all available live and on-demand trainings.

Federal On-Site Carbon Pollution-Free Electricity (CFE) Purchase Contracts

1 Hour | 0.2 CEUs | Intermediate

FEMP is helping agencies understand their on-site CFE purchase options to help meet their procurement objectives. This training helps attendees understand their on-site options, limitations associated with these contracts, and strategies for ensuring a successful project.

System-Level Tools for Identifying and Quantifying Carbon Reduction Opportunities in Data Centers

1.5 Hours | 0.2 CEUs | Introductory

Typically, a data center houses a computer infrastructure as well as support infrastructure such as cooling and electrical systems. This equipment needs constant evaluation to operate as cost-effectively, as possible. This training complements information provided in a previous four-part webinar series in FY21, which introduced a broad toolkit for identifying energy-saving opportunities in data centers.

Utility Industry Basics for Federal Agency CFE Procurement

2 Hours | 0.3 CEUs | Introductory

This course provides foundational information that will help agencies understand the fundamental characteristics of the utility industry in the United States. With this information and understanding, federal agencies will be better prepared to meet the 100% CFE goals by 2030 as outlined in Executive Order 14057.
