Each year, the United States Department of Energy’s Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory releases energy flow charts that illustrate the nation's consumption and sources of energy, as well as a flow chart which shows national carbon dioxide emissions and their sources.

The latest energy flow chart shows in 2021, Americans used 97.3 quadrillion British Thermal Units of energy, equivalent to a 5% increase from 2020. However, both 2020 and 2021 annual energy consumption totals are less than those in 2018 and 2019, where Americans used more than 100 quadrillion British Thermal Units per year.

The carbon flow chart shows an increase in national carbon dioxide emissions in 2021, primarily fueled by an increase in coal for electric coal generation and increases in the petroleum-based transportation sector.

Visit the Energy Saver blog to learn more about this year's energy and carbon flow charts, including details about how renewable energy generation is shifting to solar and wind power.
