VTO Presents 2022 Awards at the Annual Merit Review

Yesterday, the U.S. Department of Energy’s Vehicle Technologies Office presented its annual awards during the 2022 Annual Merit Review (AMR) Plenary. Each year, VTO presents awards to individuals from partner institutions for contributions to overall program efforts and to recognize research, development, demonstration, and deployment achievements in specific areas.

This year’s awardees were:

Distinguished Achievement Awards

  • Amgad Elgowainy and Jarod Kelly, Argonne National Laboratory: For leading a Cradle-to-Grave (“C2G”) analysis in support of the U.S. DRIVE partnership between DOE and industry partners.
  • Jiguang (Jason) Zhang, Pacific Northwest National Laboratory: For outstanding technical contributions to VTO’s battery R&D activities.
  • Yan (Joann) Zhou and Jim Kuiper, Argonne National Laboratory: In recognition of distinguished achievements supporting electric vehicle charging equity and the Justice40 Initiative at DOE.
  • Matthew Kramer, Ames Laboratory: For years of outstanding skill and leadership in magnetic materials research, planning, and collaboration for electric drive technologies.

Team Awards

  • Cummins, Inc.: For demonstrating 55% brake thermal efficiency in a heavy-duty diesel engine, which will contribute to the SuperTruck 2 goal of more than doubling freight efficiency compared to trucks produced a decade earlier.
    Navistar, Inc.:
For demonstrating 55% brake thermal efficiency in a heavy-duty diesel engine in a test cell, which will contribute to the SuperTruck 2 goal of more than doubling freight efficiency compared to trucks produced a decade earlier.
  • Clemson University, Honda Development & Manufacturing of America, LLC, University of Delaware, Lanxess, and Proper Group International: In recognition of Dr. Srikanth Pilla’s extraordinary expertise in leading carbon fiber thermoplastic composites door R&D to achieve weight savings, performance, and sustainability.
  • Brett Aristegui, Trev Hall, Darren Stevenson, David Kirschner, Neil Kirschner, Dan Nardozzi, and Erin Russell-Story; National Energy Technology Laboratory: In recognition of loyal dedication to VTO and commitment to the national network of Clean Cities coalitions as the Clean Cities Regional Managers.

Lifetime Distinguished Achievement Awards

  • Dennis Dees, Argonne National Laboratory: For decades of world-class research in continuum modeling of high-energy, high power, and long-lasting batteries to support and shape the DOE advanced battery portfolio.
  • David Anderson, U.S. Department of Energy: For valuable contributions to VTO by serving as inaugural Program Manager for Energy Efficient Mobility Systems and creating a meaningful and enduring program.
  • Ira Bloom, Argonne National Laboratory: For two decades of tireless support of multiple DOE programs on advanced batteries in areas of accelerated testing, life estimation, and in elucidating the physical and chemical changes that limit battery life.
  • Steve Zimmer, United States Council for Automotive Research (USCAR): For spirited leadership as executive director of USCAR and contributions to U.S. DRIVE and its predecessor partnerships.
