A wave in the ocean

DOE Announces Winners of Wave-Energy-Powered Desalination Prize: The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) recently announced the winners of $1 million in cash prizes at the Waves to Water Prize’s final stage, the DRINK Finale. The prize challenged competitors to design, build, and test early-stage prototypes that use wave energy to produce clean drinking water from ocean water. Oneka Technologies won the grand prize of $500,000 for its device, the Oneka Snowflake. Learn more about the prize’s finale events and the winners, and watch the video recap to hear from competitors.

Marine Energy Collegiate Competition Final Event: The fourth annual Marine Energy Collegiate Competition is hosting its final event from May 23–27, 2022. The event will feature final pitches from all competitors and conclude with an award ceremony. The competition challenges participants to solve complex energy challenges and build real-world experience and professional connections, paving the way for students to start their clean energy careers.

Highlights from WPTO’s Accomplishments Report: WPTO’s 2020–2021 Accomplishments Report highlights dozens of WPTO-funded efforts to advance promising hydropower and marine energy research and technologies. WPTO Report Discusses Innovations for Pumped Storage Hydropower: A new WPTO report, developed as part of the Hydropower and Water Innovation for a Resilient Electricity System (HydroWIRES) Initiative, looks at routes to continue optimizing pumped storage hydropower (PSH). This report details the current state of PSH technology, the latest trends in plant design, and an assessment of proposed new PSH concepts.

WPTO Release Marine Energy Materials and Manufacturing Workshop Report: In October 2021, WPTO hosted a virtual workshop on marine energy materials and manufacturing. This report summarizes the findings of the workshop and takes a closer look at the materials and manufacturing techniques used in the marine energy industry.

R&D Deep Dive Webinar: Alternative Opportunities for Hydropower

TOMORROW, May 19, 2022, 1–2 p.m. ET

Opportunities exist to advance hydropower within water infrastructure by characterizing both energy and nonenergy drivers to realize unique, untapped values from a range of benefits including new business models, enhanced facility and community resilience, and improved environmental outcomes. Join the cross-lab team investigating new drivers, benefits, and values as they present the top five alternative opportunities identified and discuss existing examples, challenges and barriers, and approaches to nationally scale these examples.

The peer review process enables external stakeholders to provide feedback and recommendations to accelerate industry development in water power technologies. This input informs decision making, enhances active project management, and may modify or expand existing projects. The Hydropower and Marine Energy peer reviews will be virtual and open to the public.
