There is $25 million in funding available for innovative research and development projects in concentrating solar-thermal power (CSP) technologies. This funding opportunity is designed to help decarbonize industrial processes, like cement, ammonia, and steel production, and advance particle-based thermal storage. Diverse teams from universities, federally funded research and development centers, nonprofit and for-profit companies, community-based organizations, state agencies, and local governments are encouraged to apply. The Small Innovative Projects in Solar (SIPS) funding program is open for 2022 applications. SETO will award up to $5 million for innovative research and development seedling projects in photovoltaics (PV) and CSP technologies that accelerate the large-scale deployment of solar technologies. Universities, research organizations, and researchers who have never received DOE funding are encouraged to apply. Submit a mandatory letter of intent by Feb. 28.
Applications for Phase One of the Inclusive Energy Innovation Prize are due by Feb. 25. The Office of Economic Impact and Diversity launched the prize to support innovation in underrepresented communities in the energy sector.
The Hands-On Photovoltaic Experience (HOPE) is a workshop aimed at doctoral students pursuing PV-related research who would like to learn more about the fabrication, measurement, and study of PV materials and devices. Come spend a week (or two) with world-renowned researchers in Golden, Colorado at the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) and Colorado School of Mines July 17-22, 2022 or virtually July 12-22, 2022. Applications to participate are due Mar. 16.
Remote, island, and islanded communities can apply to receive substantial support from DOE’s Energy Transitions Initiative Partnership Project (ETIPP) to transform their energy systems and increase energy resilience. ETIPP employs a community-driven approach to identify and plan strategic clean energy and energy resilience solutions that address a community's specific challenges. Apply by Apr. 15.
Perovskite solar companies are encouraged to apply to the American-Made Perovskite Startup Prize Countdown Contest, which is designed to accelerate the growth of the U.S. perovskite industry. Both new and previous applicants are eligible. Finalists will receive $200,000 cash prize and can move on in the competition. Apply by Apr. 28.
The Technology Commercialization Fund (TCF) Lab Call will fund national laboratory researchers to collaborate with non-federal partners, including private companies, to create innovative programs and activities aimed at streamlining the pathway to market for technologies developed at the labs. Private partners interested in working with the national laboratories through this opportunity can sign up for the Teaming Partner List and learn more at the informational webinar on Feb. 22 at 2:30 p.m. ET. Applications from national laboratory teams are due by Apr. 29.
Competition is officially underway in the American-Made Solar Forecasting Prize, which is designed to better enable solar industry stakeholders with state-of-the-art solar forecasting capabilities. The 23 competing teams are now submitting daily forecasts for various cities across the country and showcasing their solar forecasting algorithms. Teams are competing for up to $50,000 in cash prizes through Mar. 13. Check out the Solar Forecasting Prize’s anonymized results through the weekly leaderboard.
The American Society for Testing and Materials published a new standard to make sure solar panels that are no longer functional can be safely recycled. The standard establishes a panel sample preparation process for the Environmental Protection Agency’s Toxicity Characteristic Leaching Procedure that determines if the out-of-service panels contain hazardous materials.
