ICYMI: What Happened at the Long Duration Storage Shot Summit Last Week?

Energy Earthshots Storage - U.S. Department of Energy

Last week, more than 1,000 people attended the U.S. Department of Energy’s (DOE) Long Duration Storage Shot Summit in support of DOE’s ongoing efforts to reduce the cost of grid-scale energy storage by 90% within the next decade.

DOE Deputy Secretary David Turk kicked off the summit with welcome remarks, followed by a roster of distinguished speakers and thought leaders for a wide-ranging conversation on how to achieve low-cost, grid-scale energy storage. Speakers included:

  • Ali A. Zaidi, Deputy White House National Climate Advisor
  • Senator Susan Collins (R-ME)
  • Senator Angus King (I-ME)
  • Congressman Bill Foster (D-IL 11th District)
  • Audrey Zibelman, Google X

In support of achieving the Long Duration Storage Shot, DOE announced $17.9 million in funding for four research and development projects to scale up American manufacturing of flow battery and long-duration storage systems. DOE also launched a new $9 million effort—the Energy Storage for Social Equity Initiative—to assist as many as 15 underserved and frontline communities to leverage energy storage as a means of increasing resilience and lowering energy burdens.

The Long Duration Storage Shot is the second Earthshot announced as part of DOE’s Energy Earthshot Initiative which supports President Biden's goals to transition our economy to clean energy and address the climate crisis. The Energy Earthshots are aimed at driving the major breakthroughs needed to dramatically reduce costs of critical clean energy technologies by 2030, scale deployment to reach the goal of a net-zero economy by 2050, and create clean energy jobs. The first Earthshot, Hydrogen Shot seeks to reduce the cost of clean hydrogen by 80% to $1 per 1 kilogram in 1 decade ("1 1 1").
