Geothermal Collegiate Competition: Register Now for 2021–2022

Geothermal Collegiate Competition

The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) recently launched the 2022 Geothermal Collegiate Competition (GCC). This will be the second run of the competition, which is designed to inspire students to unlock the potential of direct use geothermal and create a plan to develop, design, and test technologies to shape the future of geothermal. Form your teams on the competition website and visit GTO’s webpage for more information on the GCC and past winners.

Attend the 2022 Geothermal Collegiate Competition webinar on Sept. 14 to learn more about this year’s rules and timeline. Registration is required.

Geothermal Rising Conference 2021 Photo Contest

Do you have a camera? Do you fancy yourself a photographer? Geothermal Rising has announced this year’s annual photo contest to showcase quality photography featuring geothermal energy around the world. Photos on any subject related to geothermal energy can be submitted to one of three categories: People & Diversity, Geothermal Landscapes & Wildlife, and Innovation & Technology. The winning photograph in each category will receive $100 and honorable mentions will receive a certificate. Submissions are due by Aug. 22.

American-Made Geothermal Lithium Extraction Prize

Did you know only 1% of U.S. lithium is sourced domestically? Submit your entries for Phase 1 of the American-Made Geothermal Lithium Extraction Prize seeking to drive the development of direct lithium extraction (DLE) in California’s Salton Sea by Sept. 2. DLE could be a game-changing extraction method, potentially delivering 10 times the current U.S. lithium demand from the Salton Sea alone. Successful DLE implementation will depend on expanding innovation and creating new technologies. Eligibility has been expanded to include domestic small businesses and university incubator partners. Visit the prize website for more information.

DOE Announces Intent to Fund Direct Air Capture FEED Studies

DOE’s Office of Fossil Energy and Carbon Management, in collaboration with the Office of Nuclear Energy and GTO, issued a notice of intent (NOI) for a funding opportunity announcement (FOA) expected to support front-end engineering design (FEED) studies of direct air capture combined with dedicated storage and coupled to existing low-carbon energy. Read the full NOI.

Project Spotlight: FORGE

DOE at PIVOT 2021: Celebrating the Geothermal Decade

FORGE is on the move and doing big things. This year alone, the Utah FORGE team drilled three new wells. An experienced drill team, coming from geothermal and oil and gas backgrounds, drilled a deep, highly deviated well, which will serve as the injection well. This well made headlines for its innovative characteristics and was completed ahead of schedule. Following on that success, the team completed a state-of-the-art seismic monitoring well earlier this summer.
