ENERGY EXCHANGE 2021 TECHNICAL TRAINING SESSIONS ANNOUNCED
Energy Exchange has released the 2021 Technical Training Sessions! This workforce development training event, hosted by DOE’s Federal Energy Management Program (FEMP) August 2–6, 2021, will play a key role in connecting the federal energy management community with the knowledge and resources needed to work hard and work smart to achieve net-zero emissions in federal operations.
Sessions will cover important topics across five tracks, including Optimized and Efficient Federal Facilities, Sustainable and Climate Resilient Buildings and Infrastructure, Deploying New and Emerging Technologies, Financing and Implementing Federal Energy and Water Projects, and Future Focused Facilities. Here is a sample of some of the new and innovative sessions at Energy Exchange 2021:

Healthy Buildings and Energy Support Tool (H-BEST) Released
FEMP, in partnership with the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory and the U.S. General Services Administration, released the Healthy Buildings and Energy Support Tool (H-BEST). The tool analyzes indoor environmental quality (IEQ) data for buildings and helps its users identify the costs and benefits of potential improvements. The IEQ categories analyzed in the tool are air quality, thermal comfort, and lighting. The target audience includes office building owners, managers, and operators, as well as energy and sustainability managers. H-BEST is part of FEMP’s Healthy Buildings Toolkit, which includes resources to provide decision support at the intersection of energy efficiency and IEQ. The H-BEST currently models office buildings, however FEMP is currently working to expand to include healthcare facilities. Operational Technology Cybersecurity for Energy Systems - Operational technology (OT) refers to programmable systems or devices that interact with the physical environment, such as industrial control systems, building management systems, fire control systems, and physical access control mechanisms. This site discusses why OT cybersecurity is important and how to understand your cybersecurity posture and current vulnerabilities to identify acceptable and unacceptable levels of risk.

Operations and Maintenance in Federal Facilities - Effective operations and maintenance (O&M) is one of the most cost-effective methods for ensuring reliability, safety, and energy and water efficiency. Inadequate maintenance of energy- and water-using systems is a major cause of waste in the federal government and the private sector. This site offers O&M information and resources that provide agencies with technology- and management-focused guidance to improve energy and water efficiency and ensure safer, more reliable operations.

Healthy Buildings Initiative - FEMP's Healthy Buildings Initiative supports the identification of energy efficiency and indoor environmental quality (IEQ) upgrades to improve business cases by leveraging savings from productivity gains and reductions in utility expenditures. The site includes information on FEMP's Healthy Buildings Toolkit, pilot study reports, case studies, and other resources for achieving healthy buildings, including presentations, documents, and training.

Energy Management Information Systems (EMIS) for Federal Facilities - FEMP helps federal agencies identify and implement an EMIS, comprised of devices, data services, and software applications that monitor, analyze, and control metered building energy use and system performance. The site includes steps for planning and procuring an EMIS, and other resources including websites, tools, and documents to support implementing EMIS in facilities.
