New Resource: Energy Data Management Guide for the Public Sector

Energy Data Management Guide

Developed by the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE), the Energy Data Management Guide provides states, local governments, and K-12 school districts with a step-by-step approach to establish a robust and sustainable energy data management program. By following the guide's seven steps, public-sector organizations can reduce energy use, save taxpayer dollars, and improve the efficiency of operations.

The Energy Data Management Guide features:

  • Proven strategies with demonstrated, portfolio-wide energy savings
  • Data management tools and resources
  • Customizable templates and worksheets
  • Relevant examples and case studies.

Get started today and join the public-sector organizations featured in the guide that have achieved sustained energy savings of at least 2% per year.

Join Now: The Sustainable Corrections Infrastructure Partnership (SCIP) Accelerator

Sustainable Corrections Infrastructure Partnership (SCIP) Accelerator

The Sustainable Corrections Infrastructure Partnership (SCIP) Accelerator welcomes state and federal agencies to join this voluntary initiative to upgrade public correctional facilities. Over three years, partners will design solutions that catalyze energy and water efficiency, renewable energy and storage technologies, and energy management planning to reduce operating and maintenance costs in public correctional facilities while maintaining their sector priorities of security and resilience. State and federal agencies can now join SCIP by submitting a partnership application. For more information, contact Alice Dasek at Alice.Dasek@ee.doe.gov.

Funding Opportunity for Connected Communities

DOE announced it will provide up to $65 million through its Connected Communities funding opportunity announcement (FOA) to expand DOE’s network of grid-interactive efficient building communities nationwide. The purpose of the Connected Communities FOA is to demonstrate how groups of buildings, combined with other types of distributed energy resources like electric vehicle charging and photovoltaic generation, can reliably and cost-effectively serve as grid assets by strategically deploying efficiency and demand flexibility.

This FOA supports the Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy's (EERE) Building Technologies Office's (BTO) Grid-interactive Efficient Buildings Initiative. BTO led this FOA’s development in collaboration with the EERE Solar Energy Technologies Office and Vehicle Technologies Office, and DOE’s Office of Electricity and Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory.

For more information about the FOA (DE-FOA-0002206) and how to apply, visit the EERE Funding Exchange website.

New Compilation of Resources Focus on Resilience in the Public Sector

The State and Local Solution Center website brings key resilience resources to one convenient location with the new web page, Resilience in the Public Sector. This web page highlights resources and tools from DOE and other organizations with the intention to inform states, local governments, and K-12 schools on various resilience and energy technology topics. Resources include:

Maps Provide Easy-to-Understand Snapshots of Wind Resources

DOE’s Wind Energy Technologies Office recently announced a series of new and improved regional wind resource maps for the Northeast region of the United States. The latest Mid-Atlantic maps and more are available on the WINDExchange website. Wind resource maps for the Great Lakes region are planned for a release by the end of the year, with more maps to follow.

Learn more about wind resource maps, how they serve as both art and science, and meet a cartographer at the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL).

Solar Power Increases Across States

U.S. solar deployment is on the rise with 10 states generating more than 5% of their electricity from solar. Leading the pack is California, at nearly 22%. This spring, Hawaii increased its community solar offering from 8 megawatts (MW) to 235 MW, providing more access to low- and moderate-income households.

Read more about what’s happening with solar across the country in the latest Quarterly Solar Industry Update from NREL.

Funding Opportunity for Wood Products and Wood Energy Innovations

The U.S. Department of Agriculture's Forest Service is now accepting applications for approximately $10 million in funding through the 2021 Wood Innovations Grant and the 2021 Community Wood Energy and Wood Innovation Grant. These grants support wood products and wood energy innovations while reducing hazardous fuels and improving forest health. For more information, visit the Forest Service’s Wood Innovations website.

FEMA Guide to Expanding Mitigation: Making the Connection to Electric Power

Following the recently announced Building Resilient Infrastructure in Communities (BRIC) funding opportunity, FEMA completed a series of guides on expanding mitigation to different sectors, including the Guide to Expanding Mitigation: Making the Connection to Electric Power. This guide shows how community officials can work with public and private actors in the electric power sector to support hazard mitigation, especially in the planning process, and help community officials initiate a conversation about mitigation investments that improve the resilience of electric power systems. The guide also highlights energy efficiency as a key first step in an electric power mitigation strategy.
