Energy-Saving ORNL Ethanol-to-Jet-Fuel Process Licensed by Prometheus Fuels

Prometheus Fuels has licensed an ethanol-to-jet-fuel conversion process developed by researchers at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) with support from the U.S. Department of Energy’s Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy’s Bioenergy Technologies Office (BETO) and the Chemical Catalysis for Bioenergy Consortium (ChemCatBio).
The high energy use and capital cost involved in the current process for converting biomass-derived ethanol into aviation fuels is a challenge that BETO is working to address. The new technology will enable cost-competitive production of jet fuel from ethanol. With a slight variation, the same process can also convert ethanol into 1,3-butadiene, a precursor material that can be used to make rubber and polymer products.
