At the July 30, 2020, Biomass Research and Development (BR&D) Board Meeting, the Board unanimously voted to establish the Advanced Aviation Fuels Interagency Working Group within the framework of the Bioeconomy Initiative.
The Bioeconomy Initiative Interagency Working Groups represent federal efforts to coordinate interagency work in collaboration with public and private stakeholders to overcome scientific and other challenges relevant to growing the bioeconomy.
In support of this interagency working group’s mission, the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) has announced its intent to award $23 million in advanced aviation fuels R&D and has released Sustainable Aviation Fuel: Review of Technical Pathways, a new report on this topic.
“Developing advanced aviation fuel from biomass and waste resources has been a priority for DOE and other federal agencies for quite some time,” said Daniel R Simmons, DOE Co-Chair of the BR&D Board and Assistant Secretary for DOE’s Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy. “The efforts conducted and coordinated by this interagency working group will be instrumental for the advancement of these fuels.”
“Industry and interagency collaboration around developing advanced aviation fuels is extensive and will continue to be a key innovation goal as industry seeks to incorporate more sustainable aviation fuel in their fleets,” said Dr. Scott Hutchins, U.S. Department of Agriculture Co-Chair of the BR&D Board and Deputy Under Secretary of Research, Education, and Economics.
