The U.S. Department of Energy’s (DOE’s) Advanced Biofuels and Bioproducts Process Development Unit (ABPDU) at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (LBNL) is celebrating its pattern of successful industry collaborations, including the addition of its 50th industry partner, Bay Area startup MycoWorks.
The ABPDU, established in 2012, serves as a scale-up testbed for industry stakeholders to work with LBNL to develop technologies that transform raw materials — such as plants and waste — into sustainable products that impact our everyday lives. The DOE’s Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy’s Bioenergy Technologies Office provides co-shared funding to ABPDU industry partners to demonstrate these technologies and systems at progressive scales.
The ABPDU has proven to be a key resource in defining where biotechnology can succeed in the marketplace. Its partners have ranged from National Labs and universities to emerging startups and established companies. As a direct result of working with the ABPDU, many of these partners have set up their own labs or pilot plants and secured additional funding and several partners have launched commercial products.
