FEMP Welcomes New Leadership

Daniel R. Simmons, DOE’s Assistant Secretary for Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy (EERE), has appointed Leslie Nicholls as the new director of FEMP. Ms. Nicholls brings nearly three decades of energy sector and executive leadership experience to this role. As FEMP’s Strategic Director and Acting Director, Ms. Nicholls led strategic initiatives to improve the energy performance of federal facilities, including supporting the program’s expansion in technology validation to address federal sector energy, water, and resilience needs. Ms. Nicholls is also the driving force behind Energy Exchange, FEMP's annual training and trade show focusing on efficient, resilient, and secure federal operations to support mission assurance.

Notice of Intent to issue Funding to Strengthen Federal Energy and Water Infrastructure

EERE, on behalf of FEMP, announced a Notice of Intent to issue a funding opportunity to strengthen energy and water infrastructure across federal agencies. The “Assisting Federal Facilities with Energy Conservation Technologies (AFFECT) 2020 Federal Agency Call (FAC)" will provide direct funding to federal agencies to help advance the energy efficiency, resiliency, and security of their operations. To increase the impact of the projects, federal agencies will leverage energy savings performance contracts to install energy conservation measures and address infrastructure needs. For more information on FAC requirements and submission steps, please see the Notice of Intent (note: applications will not be accepted through the Notice of Intent). Read the EERE announcement to learn more.

New Tutorial Videos are Now Available for REopt Lite

REopt Lite™ users can now view a series of short tutorial videos that provide an overview of REopt Lite inputs, plus in-depth reviews of the tool’s load profile, advanced utility rate, and resilience inputs, and overviews of the tool’s financial and resilience optimization outputs. The videos are helpful for those who have heard about REopt Lite, but need some guidance on how to use the tool. If you haven't heard of REopt Lite, this web tool allows users evaluate the economic viability of distributed energy technologies, identify system sizes and battery dispatch strategies to minimize energy costs, and estimate how long a system can sustain critical load during a grid outage. Learn more about the REopt tool at the National Renewable Energy Laboratory website.

Watch the Smart Labs Toolkit Teaser Video Today

As the Better Buildings Smart Labs Accelerator sun-sets this year, FEMP, Better Buildings, and Smart Lab partners have partnered with the International Institute for Sustainable Laboratories (I2SL) to develop the Smart Labs Toolkit. The toolkit will provide a systematic, risk-based, and demand-driven process to help stakeholders plan and cost-effectively achieve safe, efficient, and sustainable laboratories. Better Buildings will host a webinar on the toolkit on Tuesday, May 12, 2020, after it is published. In the meantime, check out a teaser video and sign up for updates on the toolkit.
