January 2020 Product Category Updates

Federal agencies are required to purchase energy-efficient products. To help buyers meet these requirements, FEMP maintains acquisition guidance for product categories that have the potential to generate significant federal energy savings. In January 2020, FEMP approved updated purchasing guidance for 17 commercial food service equipment, appliance, and building envelope product categories. Find the full list of the latest covered product category updates on FEMP’s Search for Energy-Efficient Products web page, and search all federally applicable energy-efficient covered product categories in the Covered Product Category Search Results table. FEMP also provides direct links to EPA’s ENERGY STAR-certified products.

New FEMP Case Study Highlights Navy-Utility Collaboration

A new FEMP case study highlights energy resilience and mission readiness at Naval Construction Battalion Center Gulfport, Mississippi. Executed under an enhanced use lease agreement the Navy signed in 2016 with the serving utility, Mississippi Power Company (MPC), the project is split into two phases. In phase one, a 3.5-megawatt solar photovoltaic array built on brownfield land at the base began feeding the grid in MPC’s service area in early 2017. In phase two, slated for completion in late 2020, MPC and its partners are installing a microgrid system, lithium-ion battery storage, and state-of-the-art backup diesel generators. These measures, along with the integration of approximately one megawatt of power from the new solar array, will sustain many of the base’s most critical assets for at least 48 hours in the event of a grid outage.
