FEMP Shares Energy Strategies for Data Centers at 2019 Cloud and Infrastructure Summit
On Monday, October 28, 2019, professionals from the federal government IT, procurement, and data centers gathered at the 2019 Cloud and Infrastructure Summit to address cloud and infrastructure challenges, opportunities for IT modernization, and best practices for data management. FEMP participated in the event by sharing energy strategies related to the updated Office of Management and Budget Memorandum M-16-19 released in June 2019, including a new fact sheet from the Center of Expertise for Energy Efficiency in Data Centers that outlines key Data Center Optimization Initiative (DCOI) guidance that can assist with improved energy efficiency.

DOE's Acting Deputy Assistant Secretary for Energy Efficiency Addresses the Federal Utility Partnership Working Group
On November 7-8, the Federal Utility Partnership Working Group (FUPWG) Seminar returned to Washington, D.C. for the first time since 2003. To help mark the occasion, Alex Fitzsimmons, Acting Deputy Assistant Secretary for Energy Efficiency within DOE's Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy (EERE), shared his insights on EERE priorities, emphasizing the importance of the federal-utility collaboration on display at FUPWG. Mr. Fitzsimmons highlighted FEMP’s vital role in developing stakeholder partnerships and helping bridge the gap between DOE's research and development of next-generation energy technologies and their deployment and validation in the field. He emphasized that these partnerships are key to enhancing U.S. energy security and competitiveness.
Hosted by Edison Electric Institute, the seminar featured sessions on resilience, microgrids, cybersecurity, utility energy service contracts (UESC) best practices, combined heat and power, and more. Duke Energy and the U.S. Marine Corps presented a case study on a successful $100 million UESC project at Camp Lejeune.
The 2020 Spring FUPWG Seminar is scheduled for May 6–7, 2020 in Houston, Texas and will be hosted by CenterPoint Energy. More details will be posted on the FUPWG website in February 2020.
FEMP's Smart Labs Team Meets with DOE National Labs at Argonne
On November 13–14, 2019, FEMP's Smart Labs team joined attendees from 10 DOE National Laboratories at Argonne National Laboratory to discuss Smart Labs practices and how to incorporate them across the DOE labs. Presentations topics included design characteristics of high-performance laboratory buildings, the laboratory ventilation risk assessment and control banding process, building analytics, and change management. Participants also discussed the challenges of implementing Smart Labs practices and brainstormed ideas for overcoming them. The Smart Labs team will be documenting lessons learned from the workshop and sharing best practices in an upcoming Smart Labs Toolkit. Learn about the Smart Labs Model: UCI’s 2020 Workshop
FEMP’s Smart Labs Program will participate in the University of California Irvine’s (UCI) 2020 Smart Labs Workshop on Wednesday, January 29, 2020. The workshop will showcase UCI’s improved programmatic approach to designing, operating, and maintaining safe and efficient laboratories. What started as a series of retrofits and dashboards in 2008 is now a platform for environmental health and safety and facilities personnel to cohesively manage complex space. Tangible results that pay for the program include a greater than 50% reduction in lighting and heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) energy, longer equipment life, quieter lab zones, and fewer hot and cold calls. Federal agencies, universities, and other sectors are adopting this model with help from the Better Buildings Smart Labs Accelerator. New IT Equipment Specialist Module Added to DCEP Training Program
The Data Center Energy Practitioner (DCEP) Training Program raises the quality of energy assessments in data centers by training qualified practitioners. Historically, this program has focused on generalist and HVAC-specific training for data centers. DCEP is now extending its training offerings with a new IT Equipment Specialist module. This module will focus on topics such as IT asset performance, controlling IT equipment energy usage, and winning approval and executing IT energy efficiency projects. FEMP Hosts 2019 Federal Energy and Water Management Awards
FEMP recently presented its 39th annual Federal Energy and Water Management Awards at the U.S. Institute of Peace in Washington, D.C. These annual awards honor federal personnel and highlight their outstanding achievements related to energy and water cost savings, optimized energy and water use, and distributed energy at our nation’s federal facilities. The awards were presented to 28 winning individuals and teams by FEMP Director Robert Ivester and Alex Fitzsimmons, Acting Deputy Assistant Secretary for Energy Efficiency within EERE. Guest speakers included James Balocki, Deputy Assistant Secretary of the Navy (Installation and Facilities) and Skip Vaughn, Director, Office of Facilities and Property Management at the National Institute of Standards and Technology.
