Happy Bioenergy Day!
Today is the sixth annual National Bioenergy Day! The U.S. Department of Energy’s (DOE) Bioenergy Technologies Office (BETO) is celebrating the benefits of bioenergy and the many opportunities to advance the bioeconomy, or the integration of abundant, sustainable, domestic biomass in the U.S. economy. As part of Bioenergy Day, BETO is highlighting some recent accomplishments and upcoming events.
Funding Opportunity Selections were announced. DOE announced the selection of 36 projects totaling $80 million to support early-stage bioenergy research and development, which will enable cost-competitive, drop-in renewable hydrocarbon fuels, bio-based products, and power from non-food biomass and waste feedstocks. This work supports DOE’s goal of reducing the cost of bio-based drop-in fuels to $3/gallon by 2022 to continue to provide consumers with affordable, reliable transportation energy choices. Bioeconomy 2018 joins ABLC Global 2018. BETO, IEA Bioenergy, and ABLC are coming together to host ABLC Global 2018 on Nov. 7-9 in San Francisco, California! As a co-sponsor, BETO is joining IEA Bioenergy and the Advanced Bioeconomy Leadership Conference (ABLC), to host three exciting days dedicated to building the bioeconomy, as well as highlighting the latest in groundbreaking bioenergy technologies research and development.
Aviation history was made! On October 2, 2018, the world’s first commercial flight using ground-breaking sustainable aviation fuel, produced at a LanzaTech facility in Georgia, made from recycled waste carbon gases flew from Orlando, Florida to London, England. A global collaboration between DOE’s Pacific Northwest National Laboratory, LanzaTech, Virgin Atlantic, and other industry and government partners has created an efficient, sustainable jet fuel that has the potential to change the course of commercial aviation. Woodstove competition is heating up! The fourth Wood Stove Design Challenge will take place from November 9-13 on the National Mall in Washington, DC. This international competition will show off the cleanest, automated wood stoves thanks to the U.S. Department of Energy’s Bioenergy Technologies Office, the Alliance for Green Heat, the New York State Energy Research and Development Administration, U.S. Forest Service, the Osprey Foundation, and others. Visitors will be able to see how stoves are tested and can talk with the teams and wood stove experts. Photo courtesy of Alliance for Green Heat.
