Americans With Disabilities Act – 30 years later and still important as ever
Presenter: Aaron Konopasky, J.D., Ph.D. Senior Attorney-Advisor, EEOC
This workshop will focus on the workplace rights of individuals who use opioids under the Americans with Disabilities Act. Topics will include the possibility of disqualification, the illegal use of heroin or prescription opioids, the possibility that lawfully prescribed opioids could lead to a positive result on a drug test, performance and safety, and reasonable accommodations for people who are, or who have been, addicted to opioids. This workshop will also provide an update on recent COVID-19 updates.
What do we mean by "Structural Racism"?
Presenter: Kilolo Kijakazi, Institute Fellow, Urban Institute
Patterns of exclusion are everywhere evident in our society - in housing, employment, education. All conspire to perpetuate the lower status of minorities, and Blacks in particular. Dr. Kilolo Kijakazi will identify and describe the significant specifics that underlie the term, and address what it might take to lift this burden.
Legal Update
Presenter: Jeffrey Burstein, Regional Attorney; Sebastian Riccardi, Trial Attorney, EEOC
This panel will provide a roundup of the most significant employment discrimination decisions by the Federal courts within the last year, with an emphasis on Supreme Court and Second Circuit decisions and how they affect you in the workplace.
Workforce inequity can be reversed: what are the newly defined pathways to equity?
Presenter: Jessica Santos, Ph.D, Lecturer and Scientist, Brandeis University; Raechel Adams, Supervisory Trial Attorney, U.S. EEOC
COVID-19 and our nation's current racial reckoning have exposed many underlying inequalities in our national and local labor markets: Black women are disproportionately overrepresented in the essential workforce, yet they occupy the lower paid and more vulnerable jobs. Jessica Santos will illuminate the patterns of racial segregation and segmentation and indicate how employers, employees, and public sector leaders can begin to create an essential and equitable workforce. Raechel Adams will discuss the EEOC’s recent enforcement efforts in the area of race discrimination in private sector employment.
RETALIATION!
Presenters: Dr. Charles A. Scherbaum, Professor, Baruch College; Daniel Seltzer, Trial Attorney, EEOC
Panelists will focus on recent legal developments, the psychology of retaliation, and how to ensure a retaliation-free workplace.
