CELEBRATING THE SERVICE OF ALEJANDRA Y. CASTILLO
Alejandra Y. Castillo has departed EDA to join the Institute of Politics at the Harvard Kennedy School as a Resident Fellow.
During her three years as Assistant Secretary of Commerce for Economic Development, Ms. Castillo guided EDA through tremendous growth and development, leading the agency through the deployment of nearly $8 billion in economic development support across America - generating more than $80 billion in private investments and creating and retaining nearly 800,000 jobs.

Throughout Ms. Castillo's tenure at EDA, she traveled extensively across the country lifting up EDA’s work, meeting our staff, supporting our engagement with community stakeholders, and working closely with state, local, and tribal leaders. Her commitment to the EDA team was centered around building and strengthening “one EDA."
Her career in public service has spanned three decades and three Presidential administrations and she has been focused on creating equitable and inclusive opportunities for all Americans. As the daughter of immigrants and small business owners, her journey is the embodiment of the American Dream. Her own experiences have helped affirm her commitment to EDA’s number one funding priority: equity. This commitment to equity is deeply rooted in her public service career, which included a previous tenure as the first Hispanic woman to lead the Minority Business Development Agency.
EDA extends its gratitude and appreciation to former Assistant Secretary Castillo for her leadership and service and wishes her the best in her next chapter at the Harvard Kennedy School.

EDA's Recompete Program Provides the Impact Communities Need Most
Last month, EDA announced $184 million in grants for six awardees of the Distressed Area Recompete Pilot Program (Recompete). The announcement marked the culmination of the two-phase competition, which saw unprecedented interest in the much-anticipated jobs program.
Recompete builds upon EDA’s nearly 60-year history of supporting economic development across the country and is designed to make high impact investments to improve prime-age employment in distressed communities. The needs of the communities were at the forefront of every program design decision – from policy objectives to coaching and evaluation.
