Welcome to the Summer issue of Indigenous Intel, a quarterly publication of the Economic Development Administration (EDA). In this issue, we’ll bring you the latest updates on EDA’s outreach efforts all across Indian country.
This spring, Deputy Assistant Secretary for Economic Development and Chief Operating Officer Dennis Alvord traveled to Rapid City, South Dakota, to meet with Tribal stakeholders and EDA grantees. We’ll update you on those events. We’ll also report on EDA’s participation this August in an inter-agency Tribal conference in Cherokee, North Carolina, where Tribal Economic Development Representative Ernest Weston and Economic Development Representative Hillary Sherman gave a presentation on funding opportunities with EDA. In addition, we'll provide information on one of EDA’s newest funding opportunities, the Distressed Area Recompete Pilot Program.

 EDA Participates in Indian Economic Development Conference
EDA representatives participated in an August 2023 conference hosted by the U.S. Department of the Interior’s Office of Indian Economic Development in Cherokee, North Carolina. Ernest Weston, Tribal Economic Development Representative and Hillary Sherman, Economic Development Representative for North Carolina, delivered a presentation entitled Funding Opportunities for Tribes. It offered attendees information on some of EDA’s newest initiatives, such as Tech Hubs and Recompete (see announcement below), as well as the more traditional funding programs, including Public Works, University Centers, Economic Adjustment Assistance, and Disaster Supplemental Funding.
 EDA Awardee Receives New York State Tourism Excellence Award
Akwesasne Travel, an organization of the Saint Regis Mohawk Tribe (SRMT), was recently recognized in the 2023 New York State Tourism Excellence Awards. In a ceremony conducted on July 18, Akwesane Travel received the Excellence in Sustainable Stewardship: Champions of Change award for fostering genuine connections through art and experiences that perpetuate Akwesasne’s cultural heritage. In 2022, SRMT received an $857,119 EDA grant to assist the Akwesane Tourism Business Support project.
 EDA Announces Notice of Funding Opportunity for the Recompete Pilot Program
On June 29, EDA announced a Notice of Funding Opportunity for the new Distressed Area Recompete Pilot Program, which will invest $200 million toward interventions that spur economic activity in geographically diverse and persistently distressed communities across the country.  Fall 2023 Events
This fall, EDA looks to participate virtually in a series of Tribal-related economic development conferences and events. Please click on the links below for more information and to register.
Additionally, Assistant Secretary of Commerce for Economic Development Alejandra Castillo will participate in a live event sponsored by the White House Initiative on Advancing Educational Equity, Excellence, and Economic Opportunity for Native Americans and Strengthening Tribal Colleges and Universities. Federal Emergency Management Agency
The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) recently announced a new tool known as the Integrated Public Alert and Warning System (IPAWS). Tribal officials can use this system to issue public alerts to their jurisdictions, such as missing person reports and public health and safety updates. Eleven Tribes are currently using the system, which is free of charge. For more information, please visit fema.gov

Department of Commerce
The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration is awarding $1.8 million in federal funding to encourage Tribal engagement with Regional Oceanic Partnerships, to enable Tribes to better define intertribal ocean and coastal management priorities. Department of Health and Human Services
The Administration for Community Living is awarding more than $740,000 in federal funding to enhance and improve the provision of adult protective services by Tribal governments and/or Tribal organizations. The deadline to apply is September 1, 2023. For more information, please visit grants.gov.
Department of Housing and Urban Development
The Indian Block Housing program awards grants to Tribal organizations for use in developing housing and promoting economic opportunities. For more information, please visit hud.gov.
Department of the Interior
The Bureau of Indian Affairs is awarding $2 million in federal funding to Tribal governments and organizations to support Native-American tourism. The deadline to apply is September 29, 2023. For more information, please visit grants.gov.
Multi-Departmental Funding Opportunities for Tribal Green Building
Federal, Tribal and some state agencies provide grants and loans that can be used to support Tribal green building. For a complete listing, please visit epa.gov.
National Science Foundation
The Tribal Colleges and Universities Program is awarding more than $10 million in federal funding to promote high quality science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) education, research, and outreach.
