Anne Aylward Is Volpe’s New Director and the First Woman to Hold the Position

 

Anne Aylward, a proven senior leader and results-driven executive with more than 30 years in the transportation field, has been selected as Volpe’s new director. She is the organization’s seventh permanent director and the first woman to hold the position.

Aylward’s new role builds on her 20 years of service at Volpe, during which time she has made substantial contributions to U.S. DOT priorities.

Volpe Staff at U.S. and International Events


Volpe staff were featured at the following events in June and July:

  • Michael Scarpino presented at the Ocean State Clean Cities Stakeholder Meeting in Providence, Rhode Island, on July 19. Scarpino discussed the Northeast Diesel Collaborative Clean Freight Corridor Workgroup’s efforts to develop clean corridors by coordinating across the states to advance high-efficiency, low-emission alternative transportation technologies across all modes.

  • Michael Dinning presented and facilitated a discussion on cybersecurity and transportation resilience at the Transportation Research Board’s Executive Committee Meeting, held June 22-23 in Irvine, California. 

  • Dr. Divya Chandra presented study recommendations on subjective instrument flight complexity and proposed next steps for research with Dr. Rebecca Markunas. This presentation was in support of the Pilot Controller Procedures and Systems Integration Working Group of the Performance-Based Operations Aviation Rulemaking Committee, held June 21-23 in Englewood, Colorado. The research impacts aviation safety by exploring human factors issues related to instrument design procedures and associated charting to help mitigate pilot error.
     
  • Dr. Kristin Lewis participated in the International Civil Aviation Organization’s Alternative Fuels Task Force working meeting, held June 20-23 in Montreal, Canada. Dr. Lewis provided technical expertise in support of FAA’s Office of Environment and Energy.

  • George Noel presented a paper on assessing emissions impacts from automated vehicles at the Air & Waste Management Association’s 109th Annual Conference & Exhibition, held June 20-23 in New Orleans, Louisiana.

  • Christopher Cutler and Amanda Rapoza participated in the Institute of Noise Control Engineering (INCE) Noise-Con 2016 Conference, held June 13-15 in Providence, Rhode Island. Cutler won the INCE Leo Beranek Student Medal of Excellence in the study of noise control in 2015. 

  • Mikio Yanagisawa presented on emerging advanced vehicle technologies at the 2016 Traffic Safety Conference, held June 6-8 in College Station, Texas, hosted by the Texas A&M Transportation Institute. The presentation provided attendees the opportunity to learn about research data collection and usage; benefits estimation techniques; and potential changes and issues that may arise from new vehicle technologies. 

  • Jason Glaneuski participated as a panelist during a discussion on unmanned aircraft systems integration in the national airspace at the Association of Unmanned Vehicles International’s Robotica 2016 conference, held June 6-9 in Devens, Massachusetts.
