Transporting Innovation: NHI’s Journey on Future Roads

The National Highway Institute (NHI), represented by the Director, Stacey Caston, several Instructional Systems Designers (ISDs), marketing staff, and contractors attended the 2024 Transportation Research Board’s (TRB) Annual Meeting in Washington D.C. It is a privilege to participate in this world-renowned event, contributing to engaging discussions and highlighting the exciting engagements with NHI Instructors for learners and fellow transportation professionals.
This year’s event provided a platform for NHI’s representatives to communicate new and updated courses, a proof-of-concept technology to be integrated into NHI’s available courses, and a preview of the transition of the course catalog and workload to the new Blackboard system. NHI engaged with industry leaders, researchers, engineers, teachers, students, highway transportation professionals, and many others, to foster partnerships with their organizations and potential learners for NHI products.

During the annual meeting, the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) actively contributed expertise and logistics to organizing educational workshops gaining valuable knowledge on emerging trends and technologies. This experience equips FHWA and NHI to better serve the highway transportation community by incorporating the latest methodologies and best practices to create compelling and useful courses that serve learners in their careers and lives. For example, the FHWA hosted lectern session 2035, discussing the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) Leadership in Innovation discussing Technology to Protect Vulnerable Road Users. The panel of experts included Greg Slater, Tampa Hillsborough Expressway Authority (THEA), Paul Scullion, Alliance for Automotive Innovation, Henry Liu, University of Michigan, Diane Gutierrez-Scaccetti, New Jersey DOT, and Jessica Cicchino, Insurance Institute for Highway Safety. The panelists discussed the ongoing challenges confronting vulnerable road users. The data gathered by their respective organizations indicates that the integration of technology into the transportation system is proven to enhance safety during interactions between vulnerable road users and motor vehicles, ultimately saving lives.
FHWA spoke with Mr. Slater both before this event and after on specifics of THEA’s early adoption of new technologies to protect vulnerable road users. Additional insights into the interview and the topics covered during the TRB panel can be explored in the Spring 2024 issue of FHWA’s Public Roads Magazine.
