Bridging Brilliance - Elevate Your Skills with Our New and Updated Courses
At Federal Highway Administration's (FHWA) National Highway Institute (NHI), we are pleased to announce the launch of two courses that will build skills focusing on bridge construction inspection. These courses are developed for participants with a non-engineering background and limited construction knowledge, but also for construction supervisors, transportation department field inspectors, field engineers, resident engineers, structural engineers, materials engineers, and other technical personnel involved in bridge construction inspection. A new class, developed in partnership with the Bridge Construction Inspection is designed as a web-based training (WBT), empowering participants with the skills and knowledge needed for properly inspecting bridge construction. The WBT on bridge construction inspection is a prerequisite of the newly redeveloped instructor-led training (ILT) taught by a highly knowledgeable subject-matter expert. The courses are designed to improve quality, ensure nationwide uniformity, and establish minimum competencies for bridge construction inspection personnel. The two courses cumulatively provide inspectors with an improved ability to understand bridge construction, including construction processes, materials, and desired results for high-quality bridge construction.

Interactive and Engaging Course Curriculum
The Bridge Construction Inspection Web-Based Training (WBT) Prerequisite (130128) is a comprehensive introduction providing students with a foundation in bridge construction and covers the overall process of bridge construction inspection. Taking the WBT is highly recommended before taking the ILT. Participants will discover the latest materials and innovations in the bridge construction field, ensuring a properly educated workforce is able to conform to project contract requirements. The training will include small-group exercises for team building, virtual reality demonstrations, and more. Qualified inspectors are crucial components in building and maintaining dependable infrastructure in the Nation. Completing the WBT course confirms that aspiring inspectors can distinguish between critical and less-critical aspects of bridge construction, so they know where to focus their resources.

Learning from a Pro
NHI's Bridge Construction Inspection ILT (130129) is a four-day course building on lessons learned from the prerequisite course and testing the knowledge students retained from the WBT. The prerequisite course focuses on terminology, basic engineering, materials, reading plans, and personnel role identification. NHI's ILT course demonstrates the practical application of those foundations in the documentation and inspection of the various components that make up a bridge like a substructure or superstructure. The course will also address critical activities associated with bridge construction such as utilities, drainage, slope protection, and aesthetics in bridge construction inspection.
