Nearly 19,000 people are killed each year as a result of roadway departure crashes, and many more are seriously injured.  This is approximately half of all fatalities in the U.S. The Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) is working diligently to significantly reduced these fatalities and injuries and enhance safety on our nation's highways by providing this new, dynamic training on roadside safety.

FHWA's National Highway Institute (NHI) is pleased to offer the new Overview of Roadside Safety (FHWA-NHI-380079) virtual course.  This Web-based training (WBT) illustrates the importance of roadside safety within the overall highway system. It focuses on avoiding roadside crashes to the extent possible, while also exploring methods to either recover from roadway departures or minimize the severity of crashes that occur on the roadside.

Attendees will also learn how to apply their agency's standards, guidelines, and policies to common roadway and roadside needs, as well as the scientific process to roadside design, including application of technical concepts that support decision-making.
