The purpose of the ITS ePrimers are to help practicing professionals and students better understand how ITS is integrated into the planning, design, deployment, and operations of surface transportation systems. This module provides an overview of ITS related to port operations. This module also is intended to facilitate the expansion of United States port participation in the development, implementation and operations of ITS projects regionally, and in a port environment.

New Report: Meta-Analysis of Adaptive Cruise Control Applications: Operational and Environmental Benefits


With the increasing adoption of adaptive cruise control (ACC) and development of cooperative adaptive cruise control (CACC), their effect on traffic, energy, and emissions is an ever more urgent concern. Using the rapidly growing body of research on these impacts, this report presents a systematic review and meta-analysis of 67 recent studies. The U.S. Department of Transportation report provides meta-analyses of ACC and CACC vehicle-following time gaps, roadway capacity improvements, and fuel savings under a broader automated vehicle benefits research program.

The Connected Fleet Challenge: Webinar #1


October 3, 2:00 - 3:30 PM ET  This webinar, produced by the National Operations Center of Excellence (NOCoE), will present an overview of the Connected Fleet Challenge and available resources, as well as a discussion from agencies that have or are currently deploying onboard units (OBUs) on fleet vehicles. This will include a discussion of the agency motivations and lessons learned from applications related to the Signal Phase and Timing (SPaT) Challenge and the Connected Fleet Challenge.

Participants will learn about the Connected Fleet Challenge and available resources and understand agency motivations, experiences, and lessons learned regarding the deployment of OBUs and related applications.

Smart Columbus Program: Prenatal Trip Assistance (PTA) Webinar on Project Test Plan and Results


October 2, 1:30 - 2:30 PM ET – This webinar, produced by the Institute of Transportation Engineers (ITE), will focus on the PTA project’s Test Plan and Test Results. This systems engineering document was published in the spring of 2019. The primary focus of the test plan was to ensure that the initial production release of the PTA system provided the essential functions necessary to deliver the core capabilities to travelers as outlined in the Request for Proposal (RFP).

Smart Columbus  Program: Mobility Assistance Webinar on Project Test Plan and Results and Operations and Maintenance Plan


October 9, 1:30 - 2:30 PM ET – This webinar, produced by ITE, will focus on the Mobility Assistance for People with Cognitive Disabilities (MAPCD) project’s Test Plan and Test Report and the Operations and Maintenance Plan. The MAPCD Test Plan and MAPCD Test Results were published in the spring of 2019.

The webinar will conclude with a presentation of the lessons learned by the project team as they created the engineering document.
