BTS Releases March Airline On-Time/Tarmac Data

The Bureau of Transportation Statistics today released March airline on-time and tarmac numbers. Here is a summary of tables posted on the BTS website

 Tarmac times

 

The tables posted on the BTS website are:

 

 

 

Table 1: On-time arrival performance during the first three months of 2013 (80.13) was the fourth highest for the January-March period in the 19 years with comparable numbers, trailing January-March 2012, 2002 and 2003. The cancellation rate for the three-month period (1.82) was the fourth lowest in the 19 years with comparable numbers. Note that the number of reporting carriers has varied.

 

Table 2: March, with 79.79 percent of flights arriving on time, was the 75th highest month of the 219 months with comparable records. On-time performance in March 2013 was the fifth highest for any March and above the average of 77.76 for March in the previous 18 years. The cancellation rate of 1.62 percent in March 2013 was the eighth lowest for any March, below the March average of 1.89 percent in the previous 18 years and the 94th lowest for any month.

 

 

Table 3: Phoenix (86.75) had the highest and Newark (67.00) had the lowest on-time arrival performance of the 29 busiest airports in March.

 

Table 4: Phoenix (87.09) had the highest and Newark (70.41) had the lowest on-time arrival performance of the 29 busiest airports for the three-month January-March period.

 

Table 5: Portland (88.83) had the highest and Newark (68.93) had the lowest on-time departure performance of the 29 busiest airports in March.

 

Table 6: Portland (89.05) had the highest and Chicago O’Hare (68.96) had the lowest on-time departure performance of the 29 busiest airports for the three-month January-March period.

 

Tarmac Times: There were no domestic flights with tarmac time of more than three hours in March.

 

There was one international flight in March with tarmac time of more than four hours, the time period when airlines may be subject to enforcement. Avianca Flight 28 from Bogota, Colombia, to Orlando on March 24 was diverted to Miami where it was on the tarmac for 301 minutes before continuing to its destination.

 

 

Chronically Delayed:

3 consecutive months: None

 

2 consecutive months: There were eight ExpressJet flights that were more than 30 minutes late or canceled more than 50 percent of the time in both February and March.

 

1-month: In March, the most delayed flight was ExpressJet Flight 4536 from Newark to Cincinnati, which was 30 minutes late or canceled 80.8 percent of the time. ExpressJet Flight 4536 operated 21 times during the month, averaging 91 minutes late.
