BTS Releases September Airline On-Time/Tarmac Data

The Bureau of Transportation Statistics today released September airline on-time and tarmac numbers. Here is a summary of tables posted on the BTS website

The tables posted on the BTS website are: 

  

Table 1: On-time arrival performance during the first nine months of 2012 (82.19) was the second highest for the January-September period in the 18 years with comparable numbers, trailing January-September 2003 (82.32). The cancellation rate for the nine-month period (1.11) was the lowest in the 18 years with comparable numbers. The previous low was January-September 2002 (1.24). Note that the number of reporting carriers has varied.

 

Table 2: September, with 83.30 percent of flights arriving on time, was the 33rd highest month of the 213 months with comparable records. On-time performance in September 2012 was the 10th highest for any September and above the average of 82.74 for September in the previous 17 years. The cancellation rate of 0.81 percent in September 2012 was the second lowest for any September, below the average of 1.98 percent in the previous 17 years and the 11th lowest for any month.

 

Table 3: Salt Lake City (92.29) had the highest and San Francisco (66.60) had the lowest on-time arrival performance of the 29 busiest airports in September.

 

Table 4: Salt Lake City (89.42) had the highest and Newark (69.45) had the lowest on-time arrival performance of the 29 busiest airports for the nine-month January-September period.

 

Table 5: Salt Lake City (93.15) had the highest and Miami (69.30) had the lowest on-time departure performance of the 29 busiest airports in September.

 

Table 6: Salt Lake City (90.39) had the highest and Newark (71.64) had the lowest on-time departure performance of the 29 busiest airports for the nine-month January-September period.

 

Tarmac Times: No domestic flights with tarmac time of more than three hours or international flights with tarmac time of more than four hours, the time period when airlines may be subject to enforcement, in September.

 

Chronically Delayed:

3 consecutive months: Two Alaska flights, 18 SkyWest flights, three Southwest flights, and one Virgin America flights were more than 30 minutes late or canceled more than 50 percent of the time in July, August and September..

 

2 consecutive months: In addition to the 3-month flights, two American flights, one ExpressJet flight, five SkyWest flights, and six Southwest flights were more than 30 minutes late or canceled more than 50 percent of the time in both August and September.

 

1-month: In September, the most delayed flight was American Flight 2374 from Dallas-Fort Worth to Chicago O’Hare. Flight 2374 operated 17 times during the month and was 30 minutes late or canceled 76.47 percent of the time, averaging 73 minutes late.
