Rollout of Standard Application Process (SAP) Launched

The Bureau of Transportation Statistics one of 16 participating Federal Agencies

The Interagency Council on Statistical Policy has announced that the standard application process, or SAP, began accepting applications on December 8, 2022. The announcement marks an important milestone for the federal statistical system. For the first time, primary statistical agencies and units have agreed to use a single application for access to their restricted-use data assets. The U.S. Department of Transportation’s Bureau of Transportation Statistics (BTS) is pleased to be part of this groundbreaking accomplishment.

Information about the full SAP metadata catalog, including BTS confidential data assets, can be found on the platform at https://www.researchdatagov.org/

To see BTS microdata in the SAP, visit the BTS SAP Inventory page.

All applications for access to restricted-use data maintained by BTS should be submitted via the SAP.

Users with questions about applications for use of restricted-use data should visit the BTS SAP webpage or email BTS directly at btsresearchdatagov@dot.gov.

More information about the transition to the SAP can be found on the SAP informational webpage and within the Frequently Asked Questions.
