Low Water on the Mississippi Slows Critical Freight Flows

The Mississippi River provides a vital link for freight movement in the United States. In 2020, the river carried more than half of the 165.5 million tons that moved between the 12 states touching the Upper Mississippi System and Louisiana. For some of those states, the percentage of freight carried by the river to Louisiana is significant: 92 percent for Indiana, 81 percent for Missouri, 80 percent for Illinois, and 75 percent for Kentucky. Today, that flow of freight has been severely hampered by low water levels on the Lower River...
