The Bureau of Transportation Statistics will release the following data sets in the next two weeks:
- Airline Passenger Data, March 2020 (Preliminary)
Tuesday, May 12, 2020 – 11:00am ET
This release provides preliminary monthly passenger data from the airlines that carry the most passengers. These airlines carry 99% to scheduled service passengers on U.S. airlines. From the previous month’s release, U.S. airlines carried 6.7% more scheduled service passengers in February 2020 than in February 2019. They carried 7.5% more domestic passengers and 1.0% more international passengers than in February 2019.

- Freight Transportation Services Index (TSI), March 2020

The Freight TSI measures the month-to-month changes in for-hire freight shipments by mode of transportation. The Passenger TSI measures the month-to-month changes in travel that involves the services of the for-hire passenger transportation sector. In the previous release for February, the Freight TSI rose 0.2% in February from January, rising for the second consecutive month. From February 2019 to February 2020, the index rose 0.1% compared to a rise of 2.6% from February 2018 to February 2019 and a rise of 7.2% from February 2017 to February 2018.

- Airline Traffic Data, February 2019 final

BTS release of reported data through January. Data are for U.S. airlines monthly passengers, revenue passenger-miles, available seat-miles and load factor for systemwide, domestic and international. Numbers are seasonally-adjusted and unadjusted. In the previous release, U.S. airlines carried 79.0 million systemwide (domestic and international) scheduled service passengers in January 2020, up 0.1% from December. U.S. airlines carried 69.3 million domestic passengers and 9.7 million international passengers on flights in January.

- Passenger Airline Employment, March 2020

The release details full-time equivalent (FTE) employment numbers for U.S. scheduled service passenger airlines. Previously, BTS reported that U.S. scheduled passenger airlines employed 3.6% more workers in February 2020 than in February 2019. February’s 458,832 full-time equivalents (FTEs) was up from the previous month’s employment total in January 2020 (456,398 FTEs) and was the highest FTE total for any month since February 2003 (460,852 FTEs) and was the 76th consecutive month that U.S. scheduled passenger airline FTEs exceeded the same month of the previous year.

- Air Travel Consumer Report: March and 1st Quarter 2020 Numbers

This release consists on U.S. airline domestic monthly on-time performance, cancellations, tarmac data, mishandled baggage released in coordination with the Department of Transportation’s release of the Air Travel Consumer Report. From the previous month’s release, in February 2020, reporting marketing carriers posted an on-time arrival rate of 83.8%, down from the 84.6% on-time rate in January 2020 but up from 73.8% in February 2019. Reporting marketing carriers canceled 1.0% of their scheduled domestic flights, a lower rate than both 1.3% in January 2020 and 3.1% in February 2019. The marketing carriers include branded code-share partners of mainline carriers.

Airlines carried 7.3% less cargo by weight between the U.S. and foreign points in February 2020 than in February 2019. B region, the year-to-year changes were: Atlantic, down 0.3%; Latin America, unchanged; Pacific (including China), down 24%; and China, down 22%.

- U.S. Airline Financial Data, 2019 Annual and Fourth-Quarter

U.S. scheduled passenger airlines reported a 2019 after-tax net profit of $14.8 billion, the 7th consecutive annual after-tax profit and a pre-tax operating profit of $20.8 billion, the 11th consecutive annual pre-tax profit. Additional financial numbers for all airlines are available on the BTS financial databases.

- Airline Fuel Cost and Consumption, March 2020

U.S. airlines March 2020 fuel cost was $1.48/gal, the lowest level since November 2016 ($1.44). The March 2020 cost was down 33 cents/gal from February 2020 ($1.81) and down 54 cents/gal from March 2019 ($2.02). Industry summary of airline fuel consumption, total fuel cost and price paid per gallon are available on the database. Individual airline numbers through December are available on the BTS website.
- Airline Full-Time/Part-Time Employment, March 2020

U.S. airlines industry March 2020 employment (751,817 total full-time and part-time) was down 0.3% from February 2020 and up 2.3% from March 2019 (passenger+cargo). Regulations require airlines to report employment numbers for a pay period near the 15th of the month. Monthly full-time and part-time employment statistics are reported by U.S. airlines that operate at least one aircraft that has more than 60 seats or the capacity to carry a payload of passengers, cargo and fuel weighing more than 18,000 pounds.
