April 2019 North American Transborder Freight Numbers

 

Transborder freight between the U.S. and other North American countries (Canada and Mexico) in April 2019:

 

• Total Transborder Freight: $104.5 billion of transborder freight moved by all modes of transportation, up 1.8% compared to April 2018
• Most-used mode: Truck moved $65.1 billion of freight, down 1.0% compared to April 2018
• Second mode: Rail moved $15.6 billion of freight, up 6.3% compared to April 2018

 

 

             

Truck Freight: $65.1 billion (62.3% of all transborder freight)

• By border:

U.S.-Canada: $28.8 billion (55.5% of all northern border freight)

U.S.-Mexico: $36.3 billion (68.9% of all southern border freight)

• Compared to April 2018:

U.S.-Canada down 3.3%

U.S.-Mexico up 1.0%

 

• Three busiest truck border ports (43.3% of total transborder truck freight)
  • Laredo, TX $15.3  billion
  • Detroit, MI   $8.6  billion
  • El Paso, TX   $5.3  billion

 

• Top three truck commodities (48.9% of total transborder truck freight)
  • Computers and parts $13.6 billion
  • Motor vehicles and parts   $9.9 billion
  • Electrical machinery    $9.5 billion

 

 

 

 

 

Rail Freight: $15.6 billion (14.9% of all transborder freight)

• By border:

U.S.-Canada: $8.5 billion (16.3% of all northern border freight)

U.S.-Mexico: $7.1 billion (13.6% of all southern border freight)

• Compared to April 2018:

U.S.-Canada down 3.8%

U.S.-Mexico up 21.5%

 

• Three busiest rail border ports (49.3% of total transborder rail freight)
  • Laredo, TX            $3.7 billion
  • Detroit, MI                        $2.3 billion
  • Port Huron, MI             $2.0 billion

 

• Top three rail commodities (59.2% of total transborder rail freight)
  • Motor vehicles and parts $7.6 billion
  • Mineral fuels $1.2 billion
