Numbers are seasonally-adjusted and unadjusted. In the previous release, U.S. airlines were estimated to have carried 74.1 million systemwide (domestic and international) scheduled service passengers in November. The 74.1 million passengers in November were unchanged from the previous month, up 2.7 percent from the previous year and up 9.9 percent from three years earlier. BTS has released the following:

  • Transportation Economic Trends 2018, Chapters 6-8
  • Dec. 17
BTS released the final three chapters of Transportation Economic Trends 2018, an annual report highlighting important trends in transportation and the economy. The three chapters cover transportation costs and prices, household transportation spending, and transportation productivity. The chapters report that average air fares by trip distance show similar patterns between 2009 and 2017. Changes in air fares ranged from a 7.8 percent increase for trips between 700 and 1,400 miles to a 28.3 percent increase for trips over 3,500 miles. Fares peaked in 2014 for all distance categories, then declined in 2015 due to lower fuel prices for carriers and competition from low-cost carriers. Average fares for trips between 700 and 1,400 miles as well as trips over 3,500 miles increased slightly in 2017, while the average fare for all other trips continued to decline from the 2014 peak.
