August 2015

Message from the Superintendent

The 2015-2016 academic year is off to a good start with the plebe class of 2019’s Acceptance Day and their first Command Inspection. In addition to stories about the Academy’s milestone events, this newsletter includes both sad and happy news on two members of our USMMA community.

We lost a treasured and respected member of the Academy, CAPT Elwood Baumgart. At our memorial service he was remembered as a consummate professional and knowledgeable dedicated professor, as well as a sports fan, and as a generous friend and shipmate with a big heart.

On a happier note, we are proud of assistant coach Bill Polian who was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in Canton, Ohio. Polian was an assistant at the Academy for five years under former Mariner head coach George Paterno during the 1970's.

Your thoughts and comments are important to us.  Please mark your calendar.  We will host our next call-in town hall on Wednesday, 16 September.  Details will be shared via this newsletter distribution list.

I look forward to seeing many of you at Parents Weekend and Secretaries Cup.

Rear Admiral James A. Helis
