Commemorating the 50th Anniversary of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973
Today marks the 50th anniversary of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973. In recognition of the anniversary, the Office of Federal Contract Compliance Programs (OFCCP), along with the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission and the Office of Disability Employment Policy (ODEP), issued a Commemorative Resource Guide.
The guide explains the key roles these agencies have in Rehabilitation Act enforcement, outreach, and education. It also includes important information about the Rehabilitation Act for workers and employers, where to turn for help, examples of best practices, links to relevant agency publications, and additional resources.
OFCCP advances equity for individuals with disabilities in its enforcement of Section 503 of the Rehabilitation Act. As part of these efforts, OFCCP provides federal contractors with compliance and technical assistance, as well as guidance on their anti-discrimination and affirmative action obligations under the law. The agency also provides federal contractors with assistance in analyzing their employment of individuals with disabilities against the aspirational utilization goal of seven percent established by OFCCP. You can learn more about OFCCP’s efforts by reading Acting Director Michele Hodge’s blog post with ODEP’s Deputy Assistant Secretary Jennifer Sheehy.
OFCCP initiatives to promote disability inclusion and reasonable accommodations at work include:
-
Resources for Recruitment and Hiring of Qualified Individuals with Disabilities – Federal contractors can visit OFCCP’s webpage for resources for Recruitment and Hiring of Qualified Individuals with Disabilities. These resources can help federal contractors expand their access to qualified individuals with disabilities.
-
Section 503 Best Practices and FAQs for Federal Contractors – As a part of OFCCP’s ongoing efforts to support federal contractor compliance with Section 503 of the Rehabilitation Act regulations, the agency provides best practices and frequently asked questions to assist contractors in meeting their equal employment and affirmative action obligations.
-
