Equal employment opportunity for individuals with disabilities is required by law and benefits our entire economy. On the 30th anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), the Office of Federal Contract Compliance Programs (OFCCP) is proud to be working to ensure the full inclusion of individuals with disabilities by federal contractors in all aspects of employment, including equal opportunity and nondiscrimination in hiring, compensation, and promotions.
OFCCP promotes disability inclusion and advances the ADA by enforcing Section 503 of the Rehabilitation Act; by providing comprehensive compliance assistance to help federal contractors achieve the nationwide goal for at least 7% of their workforce to be persons with disabilities, and eliminating employment discrimination when we find it.
At OFCCP, we launched the following initiatives to help promote disability inclusion:
-
Focused Reviews – Section 503 Focused Reviews where a compliance officer reviews contractor policies and practices related solely to Section 503 compliance. During these reviews, OFCCP also evaluates the handling of reasonable accommodation requests to ensure that individuals with disabilities are not being discriminated against in employment. We provide contractors with frequently asked questions and best practices on their Section 503 obligations.
-
Excellence in Disability Inclusion – OFCCP and the Office of Disability Employment Policy created the Excellence in Disability Inclusion Award in 2019 to recognize federal contractors who excel in meeting their responsibilities under Section 503 and exemplify the spirit of disability inclusion.
