US DOL Initiates Rulemaking to Protect Workers from Heat Hazards

Heat is the leading cause of death among all weather-related workplace hazards. On October 27, 2021, OSHA published an Advance Notice of Proposed Rulemaking (ANPRM) for Heat Injury and Illness Prevention in Outdoor and Indoor Work Settings in the Federal Register. With this publication, OSHA is beginning the rulemaking process to consider a heat-specific workplace standard that will more effectively protect workers from hazardous heat.

The publication of the ANPRM initiated a 60-day public comment period allowing OSHA to gather information, diverse perspectives, and technical expertise on issues that might be considered in developing a heat standard. OSHA encourages members of the public to review and submit comments on the ANPRM during the public comment period. You may submit comments and attachments, identified by Docket No. OSHA-2021-0009, electronically at www.regulations.gov. The comment period will close on Dec. 27, 2021.
