OSHA has issued a Safety and Health Information Bulletin (SHIB) on working safely with mobile ladder stands.  The SHIB reviews mobile ladder design, training, use, and inspection.  It also reviews how to incorporate mobile ladder safety into workplace safety and health programs.

Cold Weather Safety

An OSHA Alert in English and Spanish reviews recommended practices for working safely in cold weather.

Temporary Workers and Shipyard Employment

OSHA has issued a temporary worker bulletin on safety and health in shipyard employment.  Most shipyards are multiple employer worksites where shipyard employees, ship's crew, temporary workers, contractors, and subcontractors work side-by-side.  

Ionizing Radiation Topics Page

OSHA has updated its Ionizing Radiation Safety and Health Topics Page.  The webpage is a starting point for technical and regulatory information on the recognition, evaluation, and control of occupational health hazards associated with ionizing radiation.

National Emphasis Program on Amputations

OSHA has updated its National Emphasis Program (NEP) on amputations to focus agency inspections on amputation hazards in manufacturing industries. The NEP targets industrial and manufacturing workplaces where employees are injured by unguarded or improperly guarded machinery and equipment.  NEPs focus on particular hazards and high-hazard industries and do not create any new obligation for employers.

Taxi Drivers

A fact sheet from NIOSH and OSHA provides recommended strategies for taxi drivers to prevent robbery and violence during a shift.

Federal Worker Safety

OSHA has updated its webpage on Field Federal Safety and Health Councils.  These councils consist of federal employees and safety and health professionals who collaborate to improve safety and health for federal workers.

Mast Climbing Work Platforms

NIOSH has developed a tool that allows users to navigate through a pre-shift daily inspection of mast climbing work platforms.  Using the inspection tool is not a substitute for OSHA training requirements for mast climbing work platforms.

Work Zone Safety

The NIOSH National Occupational Research Agenda (NORA) Construction Sector Council has developed a collection of resources to prevent struck-by injuries and fatalities in construction work zones.   The collection includes resources from NIOSH, the American Road and Transportation Builders Association, OSHA, and CPWR.

Silica Exposure During Drywall Sanding

A NIOSH Health Hazard Evaluation Report evaluated worker exposure to respirable crystalline silica during drywall sanding activities at a commercial construction site.

NIOSH FACE Reports and Products

The NIOSH Fatality Assessment and Control Evaluation (FACE) Program conducts investigations on workplace fatalities to identify the factors that contributed to these fatal injuries. This information is used to develop comprehensive recommendations for preventing similar incidents.  The NIOSH FACE Program issued the following reports and products from October 1 to December 31, 2019.

CPWR Resources for Construction Safety and Health

CPWR (The Center for Construction Research and Training) has issued the following resources:

• Updates to its Best Built Plans program, which provides construction contractors and workers with practical tools and information on safe materials handling.  New resources include an app version of the planning and interactive training resources, a Spanish version of the planning tool, and a video on how to use the program.
• A hazard alert (English and Spanish), toolbox talk (English and Spanish), and infographic on solvents.
• Webpages that provide resources on suicide prevention and opioid use.
• Toolbox talks on nanomaterials: Identifying Nano-Enabled Construction Materials (English and Spanish), Introduction: Nano-Enabled Construction Materials (English and Spanish), and Prevent Exposure: Nano-Enabled Construction Material (English and Spanish).
• A hazard alert (English and Spanish) on radiofrequency (RF) radiation.

Auto Body and Machine Tool Technology Resources for Technical Education Instructors

A NIOSH grantee has developed safety and health curricula for career technical education (CTE) instructors on auto body collision technology and machine tool technology.  The curricula are designed for CTE instructors to present to students attending 1- or 2-year programs.  Modules cover topics such as fire safety, electrical safety, eye protection, and hearing protection.  Each module includes customizable classroom presentations, lab activities, quizzes, and homework.

Protecting Stone Workers from Silica Dust Exposure

The California Department of Public Health's Occupational Health Branch has developed resources to help employers and workers minimize silica dust exposure when working with engineered stone during countertop fabrication and installation. The resources include hazard warnings for workers and employers and an occupational health alert about the recent outbreak of silicosis among engineered stone fabrication workers in four states.

App Helps Businesses Combat Labor Abuses

An app developed by the U.S. Department of Labor helps businesses develop social compliance systems to combat human trafficking and other labor abuses in their product supply chains.

Fall Prevention

• South Arkansas Community College developed materials on fall protection in construction. 
• North Carolina State University developed materials in English and Spanish on fall prevention in construction. The target audience includes young workers.

Healthcare

• New Mexico Direct Caregivers Coalition developed safety and health training materials in English and Spanish for caregivers, including personal care assistants, home health aides, and community health workers. Topics include bloodborne pathogens and ergonomics.

Tree Care and Landscaping

• The University of Texas at Arlington developed safety and health training materials in English and Spanish for tree care and landscape workers.
