The U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) is directing nearly $300 million in federal funding through the FY2026 Model Cities Initiative (MCI) Notice of Funding Opportunity (NOFO) to transform public safety in America’s cities. Through this initiative, two to four cities will be selected to receive awards supporting the implementation of comprehensive and innovative strategies to reduce crime, restore law and order, and enhance public safety.

The Model Cities Initiative will provide substantial, targeted funding to select cities, emphasizing common sense policing, including prioritizing deterrence through proactive policing and increasing police activity in high crime areas. Funding will also encourage the adoption of new technologies—including drones and artificial intelligence—and modern methods to track criminal behavior and gather intelligence.

Cities will apply through a whole-of-city approach. That means that city leaders, including the mayor, sheriff, county prosecutor, and others will work together to submit one application that proposes a persuasive vision of how this money can be awarded strategically throughout their city to improve law enforcement engagement, victim services, detention and reentry services, and preventive programs. Eligible applicants include local government entities serving a population of at least 100,000.

Purpose

This webinar will review information about the FY2026 Model Cities Initiative NOFO, including goals and objectives, eligibility criteria, activities to be funded, the application process, and timing of awards. For any questions about the MCI NOFO before or after the webinar, please email MCIquestions@usdoj.gov.
