BJS Releases Homicide Victimization in the United States, 2023 and Firearm-Involved Homicide of Children Age 11 or Younger, 2014–2023
The Bureau of Justice Statistics, in the Department of Justice's Office of Justice Programs, today released Homicide Victimization in the United States, 2023 and Firearm-Involved Homicide of Children Age 11 or Younger, 2014–2023. The reports present findings on homicide victimization based on data from the FBI's Supplementary Homicide Reports (SHR) and from BJS's and the FBI's National Incident-Based Reporting System (NIBRS) Estimation Program.
Homicide Victimization in the United States, 2023 describes the number and rate of homicide victimizations reported by law enforcement agencies in the United States, including victim demographic characteristics, victim-offender relationships, the type of weapon(s) present, and the number of victims involved in the incident.
Firearm-Involved Homicide of Children Age 11 or Younger, 2014–2023, the latest Just the Stats report, presents data on child homicides (i.e., murder or nonnegligent manslaughter of a victim age 11 or younger) and compares it with data on child homicides involving firearms.
Concurrently, BJS released the datasets and related codebooks for the 2023 National Incident-Based Reporting System (NIBRS) National Estimates, available through an Application Program Interface (API). The API provides access to NIBRS national estimates of crime for 2023 and includes nationally representative data at the incident, offense, and victim levels for crime reported by law enforcement.
