A MESSAGE FROM ACTING ASSISTANT ATTORNEY GENERAL BRENT J. COHEN
As we close out 2024, I want to recognize the significant progress we've made in advancing safety and justice across America's communities. Through partnership with state, local and Tribal leaders, we've worked to expand opportunity and strengthen public safety in meaningful ways.
December brought three important events that showcase our commitment to evidence-based approaches. In Minneapolis, we celebrated the 10th anniversary of the National Public Safety Partnership, bringing together representatives from 67 sites to share strategies for building safer communities. In Palm Springs, the 18th National Indian Nations Conference convened 1,700 Tribal leaders and professionals to address victimization in Tribal communities, strengthening our support for Tribal sovereignty and victim services.
We concluded the year in Philadelphia, marking 15 years of the Second Chance Act with more than 700 reentry professionals and community leaders. The Second Chance Act has advanced systems reform and provided crucial support to 400,000 individuals through housing, treatment, job placement and other essential services to improve the reentry process. The conference highlighted what we've learned about addressing behavioral health needs and creating education and employment opportunities for people returning to their communities.
These gatherings reflect the core of what we do at OJP: bringing people together to solve problems and build safer, more just communities for all. As we enter 2025, I'm encouraged by the dedication I see across our field and grateful for your continued partnership in this important work.

10 years of the Public Safety Partnership's work: Building safer communities across the nation
Since its inception, the Department of Justice's National Public Safety Partnership has been a cornerstone on efforts to enhance public safety and build safer communities. Launched in 2014 and managed by the Bureau of Justice Assistance, PSP serves as a critical resource for local jurisdictions confronting high levels of violent crime, fostering collaboration and providing assistance to address community challenges.

FROM THE VAULT
 |
|
January 13 is AMBER Alert Awareness Day. On January 13, 1996, nine-year-old Amber Hagerman was abducted while riding her bike not far from her Texas home. She was later found murdered.
Amber's case changed the way that law enforcement searches for missing children and led to the creation of the AMBER Alert system. AMBER stands for America's Missing: Broadcast Emergency Response.
|
As of December 6, 2024, 1,221 children were successfully recovered through the AMBER Alert system and 195 children were rescued because of wireless emergency alerts.
OJJDP has partnered with the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children for over 30 years to help recover missing children and prevent child victimization.
