A MESSAGE FROM ACTING ASSISTANT ATTORNEY GENERAL
BRENT J. COHEN

This month, we've been honoring important milestones and reflecting upon decades of enduring dedication to advancing justice and community safety.

Earlier this month, in recognition of the 50^th anniversary of our Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention, we were joined by past OJJDP administrators from the 1970s onwards, who shared stories and painted a vivid picture of our progress in supporting youth and improving juvenile justice systems.

October 12^th marked another significant date—the 40^th anniversary of the Victims of Crime Act. VOCA established the Crime Victims Fund, which has been crucial for supporting local victim assistance programs and victim compensation programs in every state and territory and the District of Columbia. The anniversary provided an opportunity to reflect upon the countless lives that this program has touched over four decades.

October is also Youth Justice Action Month, which calls upon us to better serve and support young people who come into contact with the justice system. I'm proud of OJJDP's ongoing efforts to amplify youth voices and create opportunities for every young person to thrive.

This newsletter includes more information on these anniversaries, plus updates on our latest funding news, upcoming events and new publications. There's a lot going on at OJP, all aimed at creating safer, fairer communities.

Commemorating the 40^th Anniversary of the Victims of Crime Act

In recognition of the 40^th Anniversary of the Victims of Crime Act (VOCA), the Office for Victims of Crime has compiled a toolkit of resources about the history of VOCA, the Crime Victims Fund (CVF), the programs it supports, and its important role in the lives of victims and survivors of crime.

Youth Justice Action Month 2024

This Youth Justice Action Month, OJP is committed to creating a fair and just system for all youth. Learn more about the OJJDP's programs that support positive change for young people.

BJS Student Research Expo

Join BJS's Student Research Expo webinar featuring postsecondary students from universities across the United States. This event will showcase student research using BJS data and select other sources.

What To Expect After Submitting Your OJP Application for Funding
If an application is selected for funding: 
- The assigned Application Submitter, Authorized Representative(s), and Entity Administrator will receive an email notice from JustGrants.
- Users will see the new award under their entity's "Awards" section in JustGrants.
Status updates for submitted applications are not available. DOJ staff will contact you if they have any questions or require additional information regarding your application for funding.

FROM THE VAULT

The Justice Assistance Act was enacted on October 12, 1984, creating both the Office of Justice Programs and the Bureau of Justice Assistance.

OJP replaced its predecessor agency, the Office of Justice Assistance, Research and Statistics. Led by an Assistant Attorney General, OJP provides staff support and coordinates the work of NIJ, OJJDP, BJA, BJS, and later, SMART.

The newly created BJA administers financial and technical assistance to improve state and local criminal justice systems. Initiatives such as the Public Safety Officers' Benefits Program, the Emergency Federal Law Enforcement Assistance Program, and the Regional Information Sharing Systems Program are placed under BJA administration.
