JUSTICE DEPARTMENT OFFERS STEM SCHOLARSHIPS FOR AMERICAN INDIANS AND ALASKA NATIVES

WASHINGTON – The Office of Justice Programs’ National Institute of Justice today announced it would award travel scholarships to American Indian and Alaska Native students who are interested in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM), or in the social and behavioral sciences (SBS), to study how those fields support criminal justice and public safety.

“Increasing opportunities for all students to access high-quality learning opportunities in STEM can encourage exploration of the role of science in solving complex problems that impact public safety,” said OJP Principal Deputy Assistant Attorney General Matt M. Dummermuth. “These scholarships allow up to 15 students to attend a criminal justice-related conference while having the chance to interact with criminal justice researchers and practitioners and learn more about what we do.”

Since its creation in 2017, the program has awarded a total of eleven scholarships to undergraduate and full-time graduate students who would like to explore ways science is applied to solving crime and providing justice. Recipients can choose to attend one of the following conferences: the International Association of Chiefs of Police; the American Society of Criminology; or the American Academy of Forensic Sciences. The scholarships cover the costs of conference registration fees, airfare, lodging, ground transportation, baggage fees, meals, and incidental expenses.

Deadline for applications is May 17, 2019. More information about this opportunity is available at: https://nij.gov/topics/tribal-justice/Pages/native-student-travel-scholarships.aspx.
