Teamwork Makes the Dream Work on Take Back Day
Many thanks to all who participated in National Prescription Drug Take Back Day on April 25. Across the nation, DEA collected 642,410 lbs., or 321 tons, of prescription drugs across 4,417 collection sites.
None of this would have been possible without the collaboration from numerous partners on the ground. For instance, in Sioux Falls, SD, staff of the non-profit group Emily's Hope showed up to Lewis Drug pharmacy locations and others, assisting approximately 55 individuals in safely disposing of unused or expired medications, also taking the opportunity to engage in conversations about prevention, overdose response, and community resources.
By teaming up with pharmacies and other establishments, drug use prevention groups turned routine errands into potentially life-saving interactions.

DEA Honors Its Fallen Heroes
On May 14, DEA honored agents and employees who lost their lives in the line of duty. Together for Families focuses on what can be done to prevent and respond to substance use and support those whose families have been affected by addiction. We do well to remember that there are thousands of DEA agents, and our partners in other federal agencies and local law enforcement, who put themselves at risk every day to make our homes and communities safer.
Please take a moment to view DEA’s Wall of Honor online, or visit the DEA Museum when you are in the Washington, D.C. area.

Submit a Nomination for the Fentanyl Free America Excellence in Protection Award
Do you know a leader in law enforcement or a law enforcement organization that is doing groundbreaking work to protect their community against fentanyl?
Please consider nominating them for a 2026 Fentanyl Free America Excellence in Protection Award.
On December 3, 2025, the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) launched Fentanyl Free America, a national enforcement and public awareness campaign focused on reducing the supply and demand for illicit fentanyl. This new initiative highlights the DEA’s continued effort to protect communities from illicit fentanyl, which was responsible for nearly 50,000 deaths last year, according to the CDC. DEA’s Fentanyl Free America campaign expands on the success of campaigns like One Pill Can Kill and strengthens the DEA’s commitment to prevention, education, and outreach.
The Excellence in Protection Awards recognize an outstanding law enforcement organization and an outstanding law enforcement professional who have demonstrated exceptional dedication, leadership, and measurable impact in protecting communities from the deadly effects of illicit fentanyl. Presented annually at the Fentanyl Free America Summit, these awards honor those advancing the Protect Pillar of the Fentanyl Free America campaign. These protection awards honor individuals and organizations who have gone above and beyond the normal expectations of duty to enforce our nation’s drug laws, disrupt fentanyl trafficking, dismantle distribution networks, prevent the diversion of precursor chemicals, and safeguard lives.
These awards will be presented during DEA’s inaugural Fentanyl Free America Summit on July 13, 2026, in Orlando, Florida. Submissions for the Protect Award will be posted to DEA’s Fentanyl Free America webpage to share best practices with individuals and organizations who are committed to creating a Fentanyl Free America.
Please note that a link to a two-minute video, posted on YouTube, about the nominee is required. The deadline for submissions is May 29, 2026.
