Building 48 – A look at the past while planning for our future
Building 48 is a one-story building built in 1941 during World War II as part of the Denver Ordinance Plant, a small arms ammunition manufacturing plant. After the war, the building was converted to use as office and warehouse space and has since seen multiple additions, the most recent in 1971.
Building 48 is located on the Denver Federal Center (DFC), home to about 6,200 employees of 26 different Federal agencies, making it the largest concentration of Federal agencies outside of Washington, D.C. The DFC encompasses nearly 670 acres and has 90 buildings with over 4,000,000 square feet of office, warehouse, lab, and special use space such as the National Ice Core Lab. IBC will share the campus with GSA, FEMA, USDA, EPA, FHA, and other DOI Bureaus (Bureau of Land Management, Bureau of Reclamation, and United States Geological Survey).

IBC continues work with GSA and our Design and Build partners, CannonDesign and Centerre Construction, to modernize and transform Building 48 from its current state to a modern sustainable office building with natural daylight throughout the building, collaborative shared spaces, private quiet rooms, and outdoor space with seating and native gardens.
Over the next five weeks, you will learn of health and safety features, sustainability efforts, landscaping plans, shared and collaborative spaces, and technology enhancements planned for the new workplace.
