By submitting its application for Home Efficiency Rebates funding, New Mexico has become the first state in the country to apply for both Home Energy Rebate programs.
New Mexico has now applied for its full $87.7 million allocation. In December, New Mexico submitted its funding application for the other Rebate program — the Home Electrification and Appliance Rebates.
Soon, New Mexico residents will be able to use these rebates to save up to $14,000 on appliances, heat pumps, insulation, and other energy-efficiency and electrification improvements.
Tens of millions of dollars will go to those in New Mexico who need it most. Under the Home Efficiency Rebates, more than half of New Mexico’s rebates will go to low-income households (i.e., those earning 80 percent or less of area median income) and low-income multifamily properties. Under the Home Electrification and Appliance Rebates, all rebates will go to low- and middle-income households (i.e., those earning 150 percent or less of area median income).
“We commend New Mexico’s Energy Conservation and Management Division for making the Rebates a top priority and being the very first state to apply for all of their program funding,” said Keishaa Austin, Acting Director of the Office of State and Community Energy Programs at the U.S. Department of Energy. “This year, New Mexicans will begin to reap the benefits by being able to access energy-saving products at a drastically reduced cost."
“The Home Efficiency Rebates offer enormous potential to uplift low-income families while also helping to kickstart New Mexico’s renewable energy economy,” said Rebecca Stair, Director of the New Mexico State Energy Office. “Our team recognized this opportunity, and immediately plunged their hearts into the effort to apply for these programs. I am proud to know that New Mexico is the first state to complete the first step in bringing these innovative, groundbreaking grant programs to its citizens.”
DOE is now reviewing New Mexico’s applications. Once DOE approves the applications and awards funding, New Mexico will complete the final steps to launch its programs.
