Call for Nominations: Materials Sciences Director of the Basic Energy Sciences Program
Dear colleagues,
The Office of Science (SC) Basic Energy Sciences (BES) program is recruiting a Director for the Materials Sciences and Engineering (MSE) Division. I am writing to request your help in identifying candidates for this position, including self-nominations. Each nominated individual will be sent a letter providing information on the position and how to apply and will be encouraged to submit an application. Please send your suggestions to Andrew Schwartz at Andrew.Schwartz@science.doe.gov and Mariam Elsayed at Mariam.Elsayed@science.doe.gov with the name, position, and organization information, as well as an email address for each candidate, by June 29, 2026.
The MSE Division, one of three Divisions in BES, supports fundamental, experimental, computational, and theoretical research to provide the knowledge base for the discovery and design of new materials with novel structures, functions, and properties. This research serves as a foundation for the development of new materials for the generation, storage, transmission, and use of energy, as well as other national priorities such as microelectronics and quantum information science. Crosscutting themes within the Division include artificial intelligence, critical materials, and nanoscience.
For more information on the MSE Division, please go to: https://science.osti.gov/bes/mse.
The MSE Division Director (DD) is responsible for the overall management of the Division in consultation with the Associate Director of BES; duties include:
- Strategic program planning
- Budget formulation and execution
- Management of federal and rotating technical staff
The DD position is within the ranks of the U.S. government’s Senior Executive Service (SES). Members of the SES serve in key positions just below Presidential appointees.
For future applicants, note that only complete applications will be considered, meaning all required documents including educational transcripts (unofficial transcripts are accepted) must be submitted with the application.
Please feel free to share this letter with your colleagues. Thank you for your help and we look forward to receiving your suggestions.
Sincerely,
Dr. Bindu Nair Associate Director for Basic Energy Sciences DOE Office of Science Bindu.Nair@science.doe.gov
