Dear colleagues,
The Office of Science (SC) Basic Energy Sciences (BES) program is recruiting a Director for the Scientific User Facility (SUF) Division. I am writing to request your help in identifying candidates for this position, including self-nominations. Each nominated individual will be sent a letter providing information on the position and how to apply and will be encouraged to submit an application. Please send your suggestions to Andrew Schwartz at Andrew.Schwartz@science.doe.gov and Mariam Elsayed at Mariam.Elsayed@science.doe.gov with the name, position, and organization information, as well as an email address for each candidate, by May 18, 2026.
The SUF Division, one of Divisions in BES, is responsible for planning, justifying, constructing, upgrading, and operating the 12 BES scientific user facilities. These facilities include five X-ray light sources (Advanced Light Source, Advanced Photon Source, Linac Coherent Light Source, National Synchrotron Light Source II, and Stanford Synchrotron Radiation Lightsource), two neutron scattering sources (High Flux Isotope Reactor and the Spallation Neutron Source), and the five Nanoscale Science Research Centers (Center for Functional Nanomaterials, Center for Integrated Nanotechnologies, Center for Nanoscale Materials, Center for Nanophase Materials Sciences, and The Molecular Foundry). Ongoing construction supported by the Division includes upgrades to existing facilities to maintain world-class and world-leading capabilities and new facilities to support the BES mission.
The Division Director (DD) works closely with the Department of Energy (DOE) National Laboratories, their site offices, DOE offices and agencies, and other offices within SC. For more information on SUF Division, please go to: https://science.osti.gov/bes/suf.
The DD position is within the ranks of the U.S. government’s Senior Executive Service (SES). Members of the SES serve in key positions just below Presidential appointees.
Please feel free to share this letter with your colleagues. Thank you for your help and we look forward to receiving your suggestions.
Sincerely,
Dr. Bindu Nair Associate Director for Basic Energy Sciences DOE Office of Science Bindu.Nair@science.doe.gov
