Dear colleagues,
Please join me in welcoming Dr. Hal Finkel as the Associate Director (AD) for the Office of Advanced Scientific Computing Research (ASCR).
Dr. Hal Finkel joined ASCR in October 2020 as a program manager for computer science research in the Computational Science Research and Partnerships (CSRP) Division. He was then later selected as the CSRP Division Director. Most recently, he served as the Acting AD for ASCR following Dr. Ceren Susut’s appointment to the Office of the Deputy Director for Science Programs last month.
Prior to joining ASCR, Hal spent nearly a decade at Argonne National Laboratory as a physicist and computational scientist at Argonne’s Leadership Computing Facility (ALCF). Hal built and led a team at ALCF that focused on advancing the computer science of compiler technology and programming languages. The team contributed significantly to the efforts of the Exascale Computing Project (ECP). They also explored artificial intelligence, quantum computing, spatial architectures, and other forward-looking technologies.
Hal has served in multiple roles to support high-level Department of Energy and Administration officials in the areas of emerging computing technologies, computer science, high-performance computing, and microelectronics. Most recently, Hal has played an instrumental role in the Genesis Mission. He has led broad community engagement efforts and strategic planning activities in coordination with the Under Secretary for Science and other Office of Science partners. In addition, Hal has made significant contributions to the Department’s effort to advance quantum information sciences and quantum computing. These efforts have contributed to the Department’s newly formed Office of Artificial Intelligence and Quantum, emphasizing the importance of these critical technologies and their benefits to the nation.
As AD, Hal will continue to foster these efforts for SC, as well as leading the ASCR program’s advanced scientific computing research portfolio, partnerships, and world-class high performance computing facilities and network.
Hal holds a Ph.D. in Physics from Yale University, where he focused on early-universe cosmology and a Bachelor of Science in Physics from Drexel University.
Congratulations to Hal on his new position during this exciting time for ASCR and the Department of Energy.
