The Department of Energy (DOE) Office of Science (SC) is filling a position for the Fusion Energy Sciences (FES) Program. The incumbent will function as a program manager for Fusion Nuclear Science (FNS) research portfolio including the Blanket/Fuel Cycle Fusion Innovation Research Engine (FIRE) Collaborative.
This position is located in the Enabling Science and Partnerships (ESP) Division. The ESP Division supports multidisciplinary, multi‐institutional team research that addresses critical scientific and technology gaps and brings together discovery science, innovation, and translational research. A key activity of this Division is to develop the scientific/technological foundation to harness fusion power. This includes the development of the blanket and fuel cycle technologies that breed/process the fuel which allows fusion to be an inexhaustible energy resource for the future. Duties include:
- Tracking and evaluating advances in fusion nuclear science and technologies, including breeding blankets, fuel cycle research, and neutronics.
- Identifying opportunities and needs in fusion nuclear science and technologies by organizing community workshops, representing the U.S. nuclear science and technologies program internationally, including activities organized by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), the International Energy Agency (IEA), and the ITER Test Blanket Module (TBM) program, and seeking out mutually beneficial collaborative opportunities with other like-minded countries.
- Representing FES in inter-agency working groups, including the nuclear data inter-agency working group and the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC)/FES working group.
- Developing and preparing Notice of Funding Opportunity (NOFO) and Funding Announcements to DOE national laboratories, conducting peer reviews of proposals for new or continuing projects, and preparing clear, concise, and technically accurate funding recommendations.
- Preparing, justifying, and supporting the budgets related to the fusion nuclear science research portfolio during the annual budget process.
- Developing and preparing strategic plans for the FES Fusion Nuclear Science programs based on scientific and technical research opportunities that are aligned with DOE, SC, and FES strategic priorities, including the FES Long-Range Plan.
