Dr. Tim Hallman joins the Office of the Deputy Director for Science Programs

We are pleased to announce that Dr. Tim Hallman is joining the Office of the Deputy Director for Science Programs (DDSP) as Senior Advisor effective November 3.  

In this new position, Dr. Hallman will provide critical insights and leadership on our outreach activities while also providing effective operational and management support to the Science Programs. 

We want to thank Dr. Hallman for his leadership of the Nuclear Physics program. Among the many accomplishments during his tenure, Dr. Hallman delivered the Facility for Rare Isotope Beams (FRIB) at Michigan State University on cost and ahead of schedule. FRIB was designed to be the most powerful heavy-ion accelerator in the world for production of short-lived nuclei. The unprecedented capability and the scientific promise of FRIB impact nuclear astrophysics, research on nature's fundamental symmetries, isotopes for medicine, homeland security, nuclear nonproliferation, national defense, and advanced accelerator technology. This newest Office of Science user facility has an active international user community of over 1,800 scientists.  

Under his leadership, the Nuclear Science Advisory Committee delivered critical strategic plans for the nuclear physics community, including the most recent “A New Era of Discovery: The 2023 Long Range Plan for Nuclear Science.” These efforts provided a decadal roadmap to support a vibrant research program in nuclear physics, new major experiments, facility construction, and the development of a diverse and inclusive workforce. 

Dr. Hallman’s early championing of diversity, equity, and inclusion put the Nuclear Physics program at the forefront of Office of Science efforts to broaden participation in our research programs. He established a new traineeship opportunity for undergraduates to enhance development, recruitment, and retention of a highly qualified and diverse workforce drawn from all the communities that the Department of Energy serves. These efforts informed the development of the subsequent Reaching a New Energy Sciences Workforce (RENEW) initiative. Dr. Hallman is a trained member of the Division of Nuclear Physics Allies program, which is committed to providing an inclusive space where all individuals can exchange ideas and share their interests in nuclear physics. His passion and dedication have increased participation and promoted inclusion of underrepresented groups in nuclear physics research.
