The Department of Energy (DOE) Office of Science (SC) is filling a position for the Fusion Energy Sciences (FES) program. The incumbent will function as a Program Manager for the FES Quantum Information Sciences (QIS) activities, which include research at the national QIS Research Centers and the FES core QIS research portfolio, consisting of several grants at universities and private industry as well as projects at several DOE labs. In addition, the PM will also manage the expanded activities in the new Emergent Confinement Concepts program focusing on non-tokamak, non-stellarator concepts, including toroidal and linear confinement configurations.
The FES Research Division supports fusion and plasma science research at DOE National Laboratories, universities, and private industry. The goal of this FES QIS Program is to support basic research in QIS that can have a transformative impact on FES mission areas, including fusion and discovery plasma science, as well as research that takes advantage of unique FES-enabled capabilities to advance QIS development.
Duties include:
- Track and evaluate advances in fusion and plasma science-relevant quantum information science and emergent confinement concepts; identify opportunities and needs in these areas.
- Represent FES in SC, interagency, and international working groups in the areas of the incumbent’s responsibility.
- Prepare Notices of Funding Opportunities (NOFOs) and Funding Announcements to DOE National Laboratories, conduct peer reviews of proposals for new or continuing projects, and prepare clear, concise, and technically accurate funding recommendations.
- Prepare, justify, and support the budgets related to the research portfolio.
- Prepare strategic plans for the programs under the incumbent’s purview based on scientific and technical research opportunities that are aligned with DOE, SC, and FES strategic priorities, including the FES Long-Range Plan.
